For this reason, we collected viscera and carcasses confiscated from several poultry and rabbit slaughterhouses, which were the subject of discussion during the session. <!--more-->In this post, the most frequent and\/or interesting lesions are compiled, of which formalin samples were also collected for histological study. In these cases it is important to confirm that it is a localized infection and that there is no evidence of systemic dissemination (lesions or abscesses in other locations).<\/p>\n<h2>CASE 2<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_12164\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12164\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12165\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas2_macro-800x564.jpg\" alt=\"Carcassa de conill. En aquesta canal es pot observar m\u00faltiples lesions nodulars a la cavitat abdominal, aix\u00ed com a l\u2019axil\u00b7la. Les de la cavitat abdominal ocupen gran part de la zona retroperitoneal dreta, envoltant el rony\u00f3 dret, aix\u00ed com adherides al fetge. In this case, multiple nodular lesions could be observed in the abdominal cavity, as well as in the armpit. Those in the abdominal cavity occupied a large part of the right retroperitoneal area, surrounding the right kidney, as well as adhered to the liver. All of them, in section, presented a pasty whitish content (pus) and a fibrous capsule 2-3 mm thick.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is a common presentation of lesions produced with <strong><em>P. multocida<\/em><\/strong> infections, although other pathogens could also cause similar lesions (<em>T. pyogenes, Staphylococcus <\/em>spp&#8230;).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12167\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12167\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12168\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas2_mIcro-800x432.jpg\" alt=\"A la histologia la lesi\u00f3 es correspon amb un absc\u00e9s, \u00e9s a dir, una col\u00b7lecci\u00f3 de restes necr\u00f2tics. Entre aquest material s\u2019hi poden observar restes necr\u00f2tiques amb mineralitzaci\u00f3 distr\u00f2fica (sageta vermella), aix\u00ed com ocasionals col\u00f2nies bacterianes (sageta negra). On the left of the image, lytic necrosis (pus) is observed and in the center, viable and degenerated heterophils are recognized. Among this material, necrotic remains with dystrophic mineralization can be observed (red arrow), as well as occasional bacterial colonies (black arrow). This material is delimited &#8211; on the right of the image &#8211; by an inflammatory transition zone (with a predominance of foamy macrophages), surrounded by granulation tissue in different states of maturation, which finally becomes mature fibrous tissue, making up the capsule of the abscess.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>CASE 3<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_12170\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12170\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12171\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas3_macro-800x421.jpg\" alt=\"Ronyons de conill. In this case, multifocal cystic formations were observed in both kidneys, which were found in both the cortex and medulla, and measured 1-4 mm in diameter.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_12173\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12173\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12174\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas3_mIcro-800x432.jpg\" alt=\"Es corresponen amb quists renals, plens de l\u00edquid ser\u00f3s, que deriven de la dilataci\u00f3 del espai urinari de la nefrona (corpuscles i\/o t\u00fabuls). A baix a la dreta es pot veure que el quist est\u00e0 entapissat per un epiteli c\u00fabic atenuat, prova de l\u2019epiteli que revestia el t\u00fabul. At the bottom right you can see that the cyst was lined by an attenuated cuboidal epithelium, evidence of the epithelium lining the tubule. Renal cysts can have multiple causes, they can be congenital or secondary to renal alterations &#8211; not observed in this case.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>CASE 4<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_12176\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12176\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12177\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Extremitat posterior de conill. La regi\u00f3 de la cuixa es troba envermellida i presenta un aspecte lleugerament gelatin\u00f3s de manera focalment extensa. The thigh region is reddened and has a slightly gelatinous appearance in a focally extensive manner. At the opening, a hematoma (clotted blood) is observed between the muscle planes and the subcutaneous tissue.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_12179\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12179\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12180\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro2-800x442.jpg\" alt=\"Al dissecar l\u2019extremitat, s\u2019evidencia una fractura del f\u00e8mur, que ha provocat l\u2019extensa hemorr\u00e0gia. \" width=\"800\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro2-800x442.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro2-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro2-768x425.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro2-1536x849.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas4_macro2-2048x1132.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When dissecting the limb, a <strong>femur fracture<\/strong> was evident, which had caused the extensive bleeding.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These types of fractures usually result from handling the rabbit, for example, during the loading or unloading of animals and are an indicator of a lack of animal welfare in the slaughterhouse. Given its anatomy and behavior, holding the animal can cause sudden movements of the hind limbs, resulting in these fractures. Another common point of fracture in these situations is the spine, which usually results in posterior paraplegia.<\/p>\n<h2>CASE 5<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_12182\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12182\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12183\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas5_macro1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Intest\u00ed gruixut de conill. In this case, a marked distension of the large intestine (caecum and colon) could be observed with abundant gas inside.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_12185\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12185\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12186\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Undiaconills-Cas5_macro2-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"En obrir-lo, es pot observar com el contingut es troba molt flu\u00efdificat (recordem que en aquest tram hauria de ser past\u00f3s). A m\u00e9s, al recte no s\u2019observaven femtes formes i presentava contingut past\u00f3s, fet anormal en els conills. In addition, no stools were observed in the rectum and it had a pasty content, which is abnormal in rabbits. All these findings can be summarized with the morphological diagnosis of <strong>catarrhal enteritis<\/strong>, referring to the fluidification of contents.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In rabbits, reference is usually made to <strong>digestive syndrome<\/strong> in these situations, where the pathology is the result of a variable combination of agents and environmental factors. Among the agents we can find there, it should be noted that they can be bacterial (such as <em>E. coli<\/em>), viral (such as rotavirus, coronavirus), or parasitic (such as coccidia).
