In this post, some lesions that we were able to observe, and of which samples were also collected in formalin for histopathological study, are discussed. Widespread multifocal areas of very dark staining can be seen in this bovine lung. On section, they go deep into the adjacent lung parenchyma.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Due to the distribution, they seem to affect entire lung lobules (lobulillar pattern). It does not represent a dangerous alteration for the animal or for food safety, however, viscera are usually declared unfit for presenting alterations of the normal appearance.<\/p>\n<h3>Case 2<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_14767\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14767\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14767\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas2-1-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"Pulmons de bov\u00ed. This air dissects the interstitium of the septum, and dilates the lymphatic vessels present there.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although <strong>interstitial emphysema<\/strong> can be a relevant finding in some conditions (bovine respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia; among others), the most common scenario at the slaughterhouse is that it is an incidental finding. However, the exact mechanism by which bovine lungs develop this emphysema in the slaughter process is not known.<\/p>\n<h3>Case 3<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_14776\" style=\"width: 499px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14776\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14776\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-489x600.jpg\" alt=\"Pulmons de bov\u00ed. In this case we see generalized reddened multifocal areas over the lung; much more pronounced on the dorsal edge of the diaphragmatic lungs.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In this case it consists of <strong>aspiration of blood<\/strong> during the sacrifice process. It should not be confused with aspiration pneumonia, since in this case an inflammatory component is absent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14779\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14779\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14779\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-2-800x480.jpg\" alt=\"Histol\u00f2gicament podem confirmar que es tracta d\u2019aspiraci\u00f3 de sang perqu\u00e8, a banda de trobar abundants eritr\u00f2cits a les llums alveolars, tamb\u00e9 omplen els bronquis i bronquiols dels lobels afectats. \" width=\"800\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-2-800x480.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-2-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-2-1536x922.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas3-2-2048x1229.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Histologically, we can confirm that this is blood aspiration because, in addition to finding abundant erythrocytes in the alveolar lumens, they also fill the bronchi and bronchioles of the affected lobule.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Case 4<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_14782\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14782\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14782\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas4-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"Pulmons de bov\u00ed. Trobem una lesi\u00f3 focal localitzada al l\u00f2bul diafragm\u00e0tic pulmonar. We found a focal lesion located in the pulmonary diaphragmatic lobe. It was hardened and prominent on the pleural surface, and when sectioned it\u00a0 slightly crackles, and presents multifocal areas filled with whitish purulent to caseous material.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This lesion is the prototype of a granulomatous lesion potentially<strong> compatible with tuberculosis<\/strong>, and it is important to study it in all cases (if found, samples must be sent to the laboratory). However, given the tuberculosis-free status of cattle herds in Catalonia; and the presence of a lung lesion in the absence of a lesion in the thoracic lymph nodes, this lesion is highly unlikely to be tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14785\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14785\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14785\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas4-2-800x506.jpg\" alt=\"Histol\u00f2gicament es pot observar el teixit pulmonar substitu\u00eft en la seva pr\u00e0ctica totalitat per ac\u00famuls irregulars de neutr\u00f2fils viables i necr\u00f2tics, delimitats per abundants macr\u00f2fags, c\u00e8l\u00b7lules gegants multinucleades i teixit de granulaci\u00f3 i fibr\u00f3s; que s\u2019acompanya d\u2019abundant inflamaci\u00f3 mononuclear. A m\u00e9s, en aquesta pneum\u00f2nia piogranulomatosa focal, es poden observar bacils en el citoplasma de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules gegants multinucleades, ocasionalment encadenats (bacteris filamentosos; probablement Nocardia spp.). In addition, in this <strong>focal pyogranulomatous pneumonia,<\/strong> bacilli can be seen in the cytoplasm of multinucleated giant cells, occasionally organized in a row (filamentous bacteria; probably <em>Nocardia<\/em> spp. arrow within inset). Therefore, this lesion did not correspond to tuberculosis.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Case 5<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_14791\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14791\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14791\" src=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cas5-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"M\u00fascul de bov\u00ed. The inflammation corresponded mainly to eosinophils (left inset), with abundant mononuclear cells and occasional multinucleated giant cells (right inset).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The histological findings are consistent with <strong>eosinophilic myositis or green muscle<\/strong>, which is an eosinophilic inflammation of bovine muscles.
