A lack of lung collapse like that can be found basically due to a pneumonic process or agonic pulmonary congestion and edema. Another possibility is that during slaughter, when cutting the trachea and blood vessels, the airways become blocked with blood clots preventing the exit of air from the lungs giving a non collapsed image.<\/p>\n

Essentially edema should not pose any additional risk to the lungs but it is also true that the presence of protein-rich fluid (edema) in a space that is not sterile could act as a growing medium and support the growth of present bacteria .<\/p>\n

Interstitial pneumonia differs from edema in that although it has a similar “gummy” consistency, when cut, the lung parenchyma does not look as humid. In cattle sometimes you can see a diffuse darker coloration and interlobar and subpleural emphysema.<\/p>\n
