In Catalonia, in the last 5 years, cases of bovine tuberculosis have decreased considerably due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www20.gencat.cat\/portal\/site\/DAR\/menuitem.3645c709047c363053b88e10b031e1a0\/?vgnextoid=89db6110436e4310VgnVCM2000009b0c1e0aRCRD&amp;vgnextchannel=89db6110436e4310VgnVCM2000009b0c1e0aRCRD&amp;vgnextfmt=default\">program<\/a> being carried out to eradicate this disease.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a low prevalence scenario as such, <strong>passive surveillance based on detection of lesions compatible with tuberculosis at the slaughterhouse<\/strong> becomes vitally important to detect new outbreaks of the disease and to control them before they spread to other herds or people.<\/p>\n<p>Tuberculosis has <a href=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/bovine-granulomatous-lymphadenitis\/?lang=en\">characteristic lesions<\/a> that involve the presence of <strong>granulomas<\/strong>, especially in the <strong>respiratory lymph nodes<\/strong> (see Figures 1 and 2). It is therefore necessary to make an accurate diagnosis of all granulomatous lesions observed at slaughter. Laboratory analysis (histopathology , PCR , microbiological culture) allow to distinguish whether these lesions are caused by mycobacteria or other etiologies that cause similar macroscopic lesions such as fungi (see Figure 4), parasites, certain neoplasias, etc&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, tuberculosis does not only affect cattle, <strong>goats\u00a0<\/strong>among other domestic species, are also susceptible and it has been proven that they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cresa.cat\/blogs\/sociedad\/en\/les-cabres-reservori-domestic-de-tuberculosi-bovina\/\">can transmit the disease to cattle herds<\/a>.
