{"id":5413,"date":"2018-04-10T16:11:44","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T15:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/sheep-can-also-have-tuberculosis\/"},"modified":"2022-03-24T18:55:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T17:55:07","slug":"sheep-can-also-have-tuberculosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/en\/sheep-can-also-have-tuberculosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheep can also have tuberculosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this blog we have previously seen cases of carcases with <strong>tuberculous lesions<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/bovine-granulomatous-lymphadenitis\/?lang=en\">bovine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/tuberculosis-surveillance-in-slaughterhouses\/?lang=en\">caprine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sesc.cat\/granulomatous-lymphadenitis-in-a-wild-boar\/?lang=en\">wild boar<\/a> species. In this post we want to show images of tuberculous lesions in the <strong>ovine<\/strong> species.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ovine, in spite of being susceptible to infection by mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis (<em>Mycobacterium tuberculosis<\/em> complex) all of them zoonotic (can cause tuberculosis in humans), are not included in the plan for the eradication of bovine tuberculosis and no routine tests are performed to control them.\u00a0 Therefore, <strong>inspection in the slaughterhouse becomes a key tool for detecting outbreaks of this disease in the ovine species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, this case has been published in which<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallruminantresearch.com\/article\/S0921-4488(17)30306-1\/pdf\">\u00a0tuberculosis transmission was shown between goats and sheep<\/a> from the same farm, reinforcing the idea that these species of small ruminants should be considered as domestic tuberculosis reservoirs.<\/p>\n<div 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Granulomatous lesions in the mediastinal lymph nodes of a sheep. <em>Mycobacterium caprae<\/em> was isolated from the (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The main differential diagnosis when we find caseous lesions in the lymph nodes of a sheep carcass is <strong>pseudotuberculosis<\/strong>, also known as &#8220;caseous lymphadenitis&#8221; caused by <em>Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis<\/em>. These lesions are usually well encapsulated and the caseum has a characteristic concentrical appearance that is not usually observed in tuberculosis, in these cases, it is also important to rule out tuberculosis.
