Laboratory analysis

The SESC will also manage the analysis of samples for laboratory diagnosis when necessary.

Submitting samples:

In the event that a meat inspector requires a laboratory determination, either at her discretion or as a result of a prior consultation to the SESC email, she may send the samples to the following address:

The samples will generally be shipped refrigerated.  SESC staff will process them in one way or another depending on the determinations that are necessary.

If pathology tests are requested, a portion of the specimens contaning the lesion of interest can be fixed in 10% diluted formalin (one part 40% commercial formaldehyde to nine parts water) to begin the tissue fixation process and save time. Wide-mouth plastic containers should preferably be used.

Request:

On the SESC website there is a specific form for inquiries that include samples for laboratory analysis. It contains a section with fields to identify the samples and the conditions in which they are submitted:

  • Identification of the samples (No. carcass, DIB, etc ...)
  • Organs / tissues shipped
  • Status of samples (chilled / frozen / in formalin)
  • Analysis requested

Once the form has been filled out and sent, the system will automatically send a confirmation email to the applicant. It is advisable to print this email and attach it to the samples sent.

In the event that the slaughterhouse does not have internet, an application, duly completed, in paper format must be attached to the samples sent (Annex 2).

Sample submission:

SESC will manage the analysis of the samples received at CReSA, sending them to the different diagnostic services that collaborate with CReSA or to CReSA's own laboratories, if applicable:

- UAB Veterinary Faculty Pathology diagnostic service (SDPV).

The SDPV offers a pathological diagnosis service.

The basic activities of this service are the diagnosis of biopsies and cytologies, the performance and diagnosis of autopsies and, sporadically, evaluations of clinical studies of different pharmacological products:

- Biopsies: a biopsy is understood to be a fragment of a tissue or organ that has just been separated (excision) from a living being for microscopic study. It is a good method of basically diagnostic study and, to a lesser extent, it can also have a prognostic value. In veterinary medicine it is used mainly in the specialties of Dermatology, Oncology, Internal Medicine (gastroenterology, nephrology, hepatology ...) and Gynecology (equidae).

- Cytologies: they are defined as the study and evaluation of the cells existing inside the body cavities, cells from different organic surfaces or from solid tissues or organs, all obtained by means of needle aspiration techniques and smears or imprinting on slides . They are especially indicated in affections of lymph nodes, bone marrow, exudates / transudates in body cavities (hydrothorax, ascites, etc.), nodular or cystic skin lesions, cerebrospinal fluid, urinary sediments, etc.

- Necropsies: it is the systematic, orderly and complete examination of a corpse in order to investigate the cause or causes of death. It is a very useful diagnostic procedure in terms of veterinary practice and it has multiple advantages, among which we can mention:

  • Epidemiological control
  • Therapeutic and toxicological control
  • Control of clinical performance
  • Forensic diagnosis
  • Means of claim in the sale of animals
  • Research Technique
  • Assistance to the conservation of wild and / or protected species

- Bacteriology and Mycology service , UAB Veterinary Faculty

Microbiology:

  • Clinical microbiology: Bacteriological and mycological culture. Antibiogram.
  • Food microbiology: Analysis of contamination indicators.
  • Specific investigation of the presence of certain bacteria (Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria ...).

Mycology:

  • Isolation and identification of mycelial fungi and yeasts
  • Mycotoxin detection and quantification
  • Investigation of contaminating fungi in industrial products
  • Investigation of fungi involved in the development and / or improvement of products
  • Evaluation of the efficacy of products with antifungal activity

- Infectious diseases veterinary diagnostic Laboratory (LvdMI). UAB Veterinary Faculty

The LvdMI addresses all those veterinarians and professionals in the sector to offer them support in their work to improve Animal Health.
The objective is not only to offer laboratory results, but also to collaborate in their interpretation and propose solutions to the health problems that arise in a farm.
This service has the guarantee of being officially recognized by the Autonomous University of Barcelona and offers the most current means in the field of infectious animal pathology.

- Molecular Genetics Veterianry Service (SVGM), UAB Veterinary Faculty

The Veterinary Service of Molecular Genetics (SVGM) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is a leading center of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in animal genomics that offers its experience in this field, both to public institutions and to private and professional companies. SVGM activity is based on genetic analysis techniques developed and implemented in our laboratory (real-time quantitative PCR, large-scale genotyping and DNA sequencing).

Among the services they offer, we highlight the identification of microorganisms by sequencing (16s RNA).

- Parasitology Laboratory, UAB Veterinary Faculty

The Parasitology laboratory has an external diagnostic service where samples can be sent for the detection and identification of parasites. The analytics that you can request are:

- IRTA-CReSA Laboratories (BSL2 & BSL3)

Although IRTA-CReSA is a center dedicated to research, there are certain diagnostic techniques that, for different reasons (biohazard, for example), are carried out at IRTA_CReSA.
