Ocular lesion in an Ostrich

The most likely cause of corneal ulcers is trauma but also may be associated with high levels of environmental ammonia. In any case, the ulcer allows the entry of bacteria into the anterior eye chamber and this would cause the hypopyon.

Other possible causes of ulcerative keratitis are: neurogenic (due to lack of esthesia in the cornea), infectious (Pseudomonas, herpesvirus ...), fungal or by Clamidophila. But the most common are of mechanical origin, especially in species with prominent eyes.

Conjunctivitis, if it did exist in this case, would very likely be caused by infection (Mycoplasma, Paramyxovirus, etc. ..) or parasitic (trematodes).

Right normal eye, left eye with central corneal ulcer with intense hypopyon.
