Crusty skin lesions in hens

Histopathological analysis evidenced ulcerative dermatitis lesions, with crusts and hyperplasia of the epidermis at the edges of the ulcers. Also, the presence of eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies) was noticed. These lesions are pathognomonic of avian pox (poxviruses).

Comment form the Animal health forum group in LinkedIn: Isolate Clostridium, Staph, or E coli for definitive diagnosis

Our pathologists answer: Thanks for your comment Joseph. Indeed many bacteria were observed in the skin lesions but, to us, the presence of such inclusion bodies is sufficient to diagnose avian pox.
