Serous cysts in the abdominal cavity of 6 months old mixed breed pigs

In one of the pigs the cyst was single, located in the mesenterium, with an opaceous wall and serous liquid content. In the other case multiple cysts were found adhered to the spleen capsule, with transparent wall and also serous liquid content.

Morphologically these lesions are consistent with Cysticerculs tenuicollis cysts (Taenia hydatigena larval stage). To confirm this diagnosis the scolex of the parasite should be identified within the cysts. Another possibility, which is more probable in the present case, consists of congenital serous cysts without pathological significance.

To confirm such diagnosis send refrigerated samples (same day) or fixed with formaline (for histopathology) or alcohol for parasitology identification, both fixatives will prevent autholysis.
