Interstitial nephritis in rabbits

These lesions occured sporadically occur in 5% of the animals of the farm. No clinical signs were observed in living animals or other lesions on the carcasses of slaughtered animals.

The images are compatible with an interstitial nephritis. In rabbits a relatively common cause of this lesion, which may be asymptomatic, is Encephalitozoonosis, a disease caused by the microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi which also causes lesions in the central nervous system.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by histopathological examination of kidney and brain samples.

White spots in the kidney surface.

When sectioned the spots delve into the renal parenchyma.
