Gout in a chicken carcass

Microscopically, the kidneys showed areas with extensive multifocal necrosis along with radialy structured crystals corresponding to tophi (monosodium urate salts deposits) accompanied by a granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate . It is, therefore, a case of visceral gout.

Birds have a special predisposition to suffer from gout since they lack the enzyme uricase that breaks down uric acid. The Gout may be due to vitamin A deficiency, diets too rich in protein or renal lesions, toxic or infectious in origin.
